Sleeping 7-year-old boy injured in drive-by shooting, Atlanta police say

Bullets struck a sleeping 7-year-old boy in his arm during a drive-by shooting early Thursday at a troubled southwest Atlanta apartment complex, police said.
Atlanta police responded to a report about a person shot just before 2 a.m. at Ashley Cascade Apartments in the 1300 block of Kimberly Way SW. The complex, site of multiple previous shootings, is west of I-285 and south of Cascade Road.
Police said the boy had “multiple gunshot wounds to his right arm.” The child was taken to a hospital, where officials said he was stable. The child’s identity was not released, but police confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he was asleep when the shooting took place.

Investigators said they believe the violence occurred during a drive-by shooting that also damaged three apartment units. No details have been released about the shooter.
“The investigation remains highly active and ongoing,” a police spokesperson told the AJC in an email.

The apartment complex is among 272 of metro Atlanta’s persistently dangerous complexes, according to the AJC’s “Dangerous Dwellings” investigation that looked into serious crimes, lax maintenance and other hazards in Atlanta neighborhoods.
Police were at the complex last month when a woman was injured in a shooting during a dispute with another tenant. They’ve responded to numerous other incidents at the site, including in 2024 when a 3-year-old was injured by a stray bullet while outside one of the buildings, the AJC previously reported.
